Most drivers will experience one or more flat tires in their lifetimes. However, this common occurrence doesn't need to be stressful. By following these steps, you can save yourself both time and money.

How to Put on a Spare Tire

1. Pull Over

If your vehicle is vibrating heavily or making strange noises, your tire is likely going flat. Pull over to the shoulder of a flat road, far away from traffic, and engage your emergency brake. If you have road flares, put them behind your car to alert other drivers of your presence.

2. Get Prepared

tiresChanging a tire requires a jack, a spare, and a lug wrench, all of which can usually be found in the trunk. Also, put a block of wood or brick under the tires on the opposite side of the vehicle to keep your car from rolling.

3. Jack Up the Car

Put the jack under your vehicle frame and use a wrench to loosen the lug nuts. Then, use the jack to raise your car about six inches off the ground. Once it's raised, take the lug nuts off completely and remove the tire.

4. Install the Spare Tire

Line up the rims of the spare with the lug bolts, and gently push them through. Then, tighten the lug nuts by hand before lowering the vehicle back to the ground with the jack. Finally, tighten the lug nuts with your wrench.
