As a loving pet owner, you want to do all you can to keep your furry friend happy and healthy. A rabies vaccination is one essential step to protect both dogs. Additionally, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®), most states, including Connecticut, require proof of mandatory rabies vaccination. Find out why this is important and get the facts on the vaccine below.

Why Does Your Pet Need a Rabies Vaccination?

Rabies is caused by a virus. Dogs and cats can get the disease after coming into contact with another infected animal. There is no way to test for rabies while the pet is still alive, and by the time symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. Rabies vaccination is thus the best way to keep your pet safe.

rabies vaccinationIf your animal comes into contact with another infected animal or gets bitten, and you don’t have proof of an up-do-date rabies vaccine, they may have to be quarantined in abidance by the laws in your state. This is in the interest of protecting other animals, as well as people. In some cases, your cat or dog may even have to be euthanized.

How Long Does a Rabies Vaccination Last?

Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccine current is in their own best interests. Puppies should get their first vaccination at 12 weeks of age. A second booster shot is needed one year after the first. Depending on the type of vaccine used, a new shot will be required every one to three years after this. However, some states require annual vaccinations.
