What do they do?

These technicians are trained in performing and overseeing a variety of cardiovascular exams, including the electrocardiogram, also known as the EKG.  EKGs are designed to measure and record the electrical activity of the heart using small electrodes. This activity is displayed as a graph of lines with spikes and dips, known as waves. As an EKG Technician, you are responsible for reviewing the data, highlighting anomalies, or areas of concern, and presenting it to your patient's physician. 

What training is required?

Some four-year universities also offer EKG training, However, only a high school diploma or GED is required to enroll in EKG Technician school. Many programs provide a mix of classroom learning, as well as on-the-job training, and offer EKG Technician licensing in as little as one to two years. 

Where do EKG technicians work?

With this certification, you can work in a variety of medical offices and outpatient units, including cardiac units, emergency rooms, medical offices, imaging centers, and laboratories. EKG Technicians work in direct contact with patients, doctors, and technologists every day. Depending on your specific field and location of practice, you could even be called in to assist in the operating room.
