If a home renovation is on your list of New Year's resolutions, starting with the kitchen is a smart idea. Not only is the kitchen one of the areas where people spend most of their time at home, but it’s also one of the main rooms prospective buyers seek out when looking for a home. If you want to make your space brighter, more vibrant, and less traditional, here are some kitchen design ideas you may want to pursue.

Kitchen Design Trends for the New Year

1. Colored Custom Cabinetry

Homeowners and buyers will continue to put storage at the top of their list of kitchen features. If you’re redoing the cabinets, choose custom over prebuilt. Custom cabinets allow you to work within your unique space. Keep the purpose of the drawer in mind: design full-length cabinets to hide brooms and cleaning supplies, tall shelves to house small appliances, a pull-out spice rack, and built-ins for dinnerware display.

Next, play with colors, like a bold navy or dark olive. If you want something more subdued, choose slate gray or a light turquoise.

2. Natural Wood Tones

3. Minimalism

For the new year, many kitchen design firms are moving away from maximalist design styles. Instead of ornate cabinetry and a kitchen island with a breakfast bar, don’t be surprised to see floating shelves and open floor plan. Although this style isn’t for everyone — such as busy households with kids — it’s worth considering whether you can incorporate this style into your space.
