Dressing in layers helps you stay warm during a ski trip to Windham Mountain. It also allows you to add and remove pieces according to how cold you feel throughout the day. Here are a few tips to help you pack and layer up when you arrive at the slopes.

Base Layers

These pieces are more effective when they don’t have a lot of seams that leave gaps. For this reason, thermal long underwear is preferred by many ski trip veterans. Top that off with a pair of leggings with fleece interiors. For the upper half, use a lightweight T-shirt made of cotton to absorb sweat.

Mid Layers

ski tripThese layers should add warmth and trap heat against the body. Choose a top made with down, such as a puffy vest or coat. Down feathers trap a lot of air, which will keep you warm.

Middle layers should also be fairly breathable to minimize sweat. Look for fabrics that have gaps, such as merino wool.

Note that middle layers aren’t typically worn on the legs, since they have to stay nimble when you ski. However, if you tend to feel cold around the legs, choose another layer of breathable fabric, such as cotton, to put under your snow pants.

Top Layers

Your top layer should be as waterproof as possible since it needs to help keep the mid and base layers dry. These aren’t typically heavy jackets, since riders need mobility to navigate the slopes. This is why your other layers should provide warmth.

Your top layer should have a lining, an insulation layer, a breathable membrane, and an outer fabric treated with a durable water repellent (DWR). This hydrophobic coating will make melted snow or water bead right off the fabric, keeping you dry and comfortable.
