Acceptable and legal identification documents are a growing necessity as airports, office buildings, and even recreational and residential spaces are tightening their security. These documents also make it possible for citizens to do everything from voting to traveling internationally. Below are some acceptable identifying legal documents and how one can secure an ID in the state of Louisiana.

What Are Examples of Valid ID Documents?

A birth certificate is a valid form of ID, provided it’s original or certified. As such, it must be issued by an authorized government agency and include an official seal. Foreign birth certificates will either need to be translated into English or given in accordance with a Certificate of Accurate Translation.

Another valid form of ID is a United States Driver’s License with a photo or a photo ID card. A U.S. Department of State Driver’s License is also accepted. A valid passport can also serve as an identification document as long as it is not expired, and it is issued by the American government.

A marriage license or certificate is also a valid means of identification, provided it’s an original or a certified copy granted after the marriage proceedings. It must include the applicant’s full name and date of birth.

How Can You Get an ID in Louisiana?

legal documents If you’re a resident of Louisiana, but you don’t yet have an official driver’s license, you can apply for an ID card regardless of age. However, you’ll need a parent or guardian to accompany you if you’re under 17. An ID card will verify your identity and can be used for everything from completing bank transactions and voting to making age-restricted purchases. To get a Louisiana ID card, you’ll need to visit a Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles in person. You will not be able to secure one by mail or online.
