Vinyl tile is a beautiful, cost-effective alternative for hardwoods or tile. The durability and waterproof finishes available make it valuable in homes that require extra protection. Keep a few maintenance tips in mind, so your vinyl looks pristine, and you prevent premature deterioration.

How to Keep Your Vinyl Tile Looking New

1. Sweep Regularly

Dirt, rocks, and debris can embed in vinyl if you don’t remove them. A bristle broom easily removes dirt and grime before it gets trapped in cracks. Make sweeping a habit, like when you come home from work or finish making dinner. Vacuuming is another excellent option for daily maintenance. However, remove the beater bar, as this can scratch and damage your vinyl.

2. Use a Damp Mop

A slightly warm, damp mop will give you the cleaning power you need to remove grime. Avoid scrubbing the floor as this can weaken the material or remove the wax sealant. Use an appropriate, gentle cleanser diluted in water. Be sure to rinse to avoid a buildup of residue.

3. Avoid Dragging Heavy Furniture

Heavy furniture that usually stays in one place should have floor protectors on the legs. This prevents it from denting the vinyl tile. For moveable furniture like chairs or an ottoman, use felt tips to avoid scratching and denting when moving the pieces.

4. Utilize Floor Mats & Rugs

High traffic areas like hallways, entryways, and exits should have a floor mat or rug. This prevents debris from the bottoms of shoes like asphalt, rocks, and dirt from being tracked in and damaging your vinyl tile. They also make cleanup easier, as you can take the mats outside to brush them off.
