Whether you are interested in WWI history or the Pennsylvania mint, you understand the joy of being a coin collector—owning something that has passed through time and plenty of other people’s lives to get to you. However, no matter how sentimental you might be about numismatics, it is exciting to find out just how much your collection is worth. In the following list, you will learn about some of the most valuable U.S. coins.

A Guide to the Most Valuable U.S. Coins

1. 1838 Half Dollar (O)

While the face value of this coin may only be a mere 50 cents, purchasing an 1838 Half Dollar could take more than $745,000 of your savings. This is not due to an error or eccentricity—just the rarity of the coin. In 1838, the U.S. mint only made 12 of them in the mint at New Orleans. The obverse of this expensive coin features Lady Liberty with a headband, and the reverse displays the familiar eagle.

2. 1794 Silver Dollar

If you are hoping to add a relic from the first US Mint to your collection, consider this pricey piece of currency from the late 18th century. Under 2,000 of the 1794 Silver Dollar were produced, and the average price is around $900,000. However, in 2013, one sold for a hefty $10 million. One of the reasons for the coin’s price is the design, which was only used for a little over a year: a profile of Liberty with her hair blowing in the wind.  One of the partners of Coins Plus, Brad Karoleff, was one of a selected few to view the $10 million coin for research just before it sold.

3. 1913 Liberty Head Nickel

While this coin is relatively recent compared to the others on this list, the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel still requires a significant investment from coin collectors. In fact, some are valued at over $4 million.  Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of this coin and the reverse shows a large “V,” the roman numeral for five.  Only 5 of these coins were produced and all are now accounted for in collections or museums.
