Keeping your furnace well maintained throughout the winter is essential for your comfort and safety. There are several checks you can make with the help of an HVAC contractor to ensure your furnace is working at maximum efficiency. Here’s a checklist of furnace maintenance tips for winter.

4 Winter Maintenance Tips for Furnaces

1. Clean It

A furnace should be cleaned regularly to prolong its life span and ensure operational efficiency. Dirt and debris should be removed by vacuuming or dusting inner components while the power is off and parts are cool. If drainage pipes and flame sensors in gas furnaces aren’t clean, they may stop working. Keep the space around your furnace free of clutter and exterior exhaust pipes clear to avoid blockages. If you don’t know how to clean your furnace, call an HVAC contractor to help you with this necessary chore.

2. Have It Professionally Inspected

An inspection can take place at any time of year, including in winter. As well as confirming that all equipment is working properly, your contractor will measure carbon monoxide (CO) levels to ensure your home and family are safe.

3. Change the Filter

If filters become clogged with debris, the air quality in your home will be affected. Your furnace will also have to work harder because of impeded airflow, leading to higher energy bills and potential mechanical and electrical damage. Check your filter once a month, and replace disposable filters every 90 days even if they don’t seem clogged.

4. Check the Thermostat

If your home isn’t warm enough, a simple adjustment to the thermostat may get things working again. Confirm the thermostat is set to “heat” and the power is on. Verify that your furnace starts working when you turn up the heat on the thermostat. If it doesn’t, you may have a wiring problem. Check for loose wires and that they’re connected according to the color and letter coding in your user manual. Have the wiring inspected by a professional if you’re unsure of its condition.
