Glass shower doors create a minimal, elegant look for your bathroom, plus they’re easier to keep clean than a curtain. However, maintaining them does require regular care. Here are some basic do’s and don'ts to follow to keep yours in good condition.

Do:

Squeegee shower doors after use.

After showering, removing excess water from the doors with a squeegee makes mold and mildew less likely to grow. It will also prevent hard water deposits from building up, which can be tougher to clean later. Keep a squeegee handy in the bathroom so you’ll remember to use it after a shower.

Clean your shower once a week.

Cleaning is easier when you take care of it more often. Once a week, wipe down your shower with a cleaning solution and sponge. You can even use a daily spray cleaner to spray your shower doors after squeegeeing excess water.

Once a month, do a deeper clean of your shower, getting into the metal frame and any nooks and crannies.

Air out the bathroom.

Mold and mildew thrive in the dark and damp. To prevent their growth, run your air vent for at least 30 minutes after a shower and leave the doors open.

Don’t:

Use acid-based cleaners.

Cut a lemon in half, and dip one part in baking soda. Rub the baking soda-coated lemon on the glass door, which will create cleaning suds. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

Scrub with abrasive brushes or sponges.

Abrasive cleaning tools like stiff-bristled brushes can scratch shower doors and the tile grout. Use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to clean instead.

Neglect the metal frame.

Your glass doors are held in place by a metal frame, which needs regular cleaning too. Use a spray cleaner and toothbrush to scrub off heavy buildup in the frame.
