If you’re moving into a new home or simply want to better organize your current one, labeling your breaker box is the first place to start. This central hub is the heart of your electrical system and will allow you to restore power when you lose a connection or while you’re waiting for an electrician. Below are the basic steps to help you create a directory.

How to Create a Circuit Directory on Your Breaker Box

1. Survey & Number

First, create a list of all the major electrical appliances in your home, including refrigerators, electric stoves, washers, and dryers. At the same time, draw out a map of the home or use a floor plan and label which rooms the appliances are in. This will give you an idea of everything that needs to be tested.

Next, assign each circuit breaker a number. This will index appliances and rooms that are tied to the breaker while you’re testing the circuits. If there’s an index from the previous homeowners, you can use it to help you organize.

Keep in mind, however, that you may be using a room differently than a previous owner did, and appliances may have been moved. Using a bedroom as an office is a common example.

2. Test the Breakers

You can talk over cell phones or walkie talkies if you have a large home. Have them note which rooms power was restored to and then check large appliances and outlets with a small device like a phone charger. You can then label the circuit index.

Move to the next circuit, labeling as you go, until you’ve identified what each breaker controls. Know that heavy-duty appliances like dryers may draw from multiple circuits.

3. Address Uncertainties

If you come across broken circuits, faulty outlets, flickering lights, or other issues, contact an electrician. These professionals will survey your home system to determine if repairs need to be made. If you’re adding a large entertainment system or appliance that will use heavy power, they may also need to add a new circuit.
