While you may have been taught to think of God as a loving father, it can still be difficult to talk to something as powerful as an omnipotent deity. If God already knows all, how should you speak with Him? Know that you’re not the only one who has trouble praying at first. If you’re not sure how to formulate your next prayer, take a look at the tips below.

3 Tips for Formulating a Prayer

1. Be Honest

If you grew up only reciting the Hail Mary or Our Father, you might think you need to use archaic language to speak to God. However, God is ready and willing to listen to whatever you have to say, as long as it comes from the heart. Instead of trying to recreate your idea of what a prayer should sound like, be honest about what you’re feeling, the obstacles you’ve faced, and your concerns for the future.

2. Don’t Just Focus on What You Need

prayerOne of the joys of talking to God on a daily basis is realizing how many blessings He has surrounded you with. Instead of asking for answers or explaining your wishes, think of what He’s already given you, whether it be good health, a loving partner, or a child. Once you start to recognize and voice your gratitude in prayer, you’ll become happier with what you have on a day-to-day basis.

3. When in Doubt, Be Silent

Praying isn’t like public speaking—you’re not performing for God. Instead, you’re communicating with Him, and, in some cases, that may be wordless. If you’re not sure what to pray about at a certain moment, simply sit in silence with your eyes closed and your phone turned off. Think about God and try to connect to the Holy Spirit.
