When you’re expecting a new arrival, it’s easy to get excited about all of the nursery decor options you see online and in catalogs and magazines. Although you might be eager to dive into a remodeling project to create the perfect space for baby, your first consideration needs to be safety. Before you pick out furniture and accessories, keep some of these design tips in mind to ensure the nursery is as safe as it is welcoming.

How to Design a Safe Nursery

1. Plan Your Projects

Having the nursery ready for the baby is a priority, but this doesn’t mean you should rush at the last moment to complete all of the projects. Ideally, remodeling projects, especially painting, should be finished at least eight weeks before the baby arrives. At that point, all of the dust has settled and any paint fumes or chemicals have had time to dissipate. Choose low-VOC paint to protect the air quality in the nursery.

2. Secure Windows

Windows let in fresh air and sunlight, but they can also present dangers. To remove choking hazards, choose cordless window coverings, and install window guards to prevent falls. Don’t place furniture under or close to windows where little ones might be tempted to climb up.

3. Anchor Furniture

While remodeling the nursery, note the location of wall studs. When planning the layout, position furniture where it can be easily mounted and anchored to the wall to ensure your child doesn’t knock it over or pull it down.

4. Wire for Safety

remodelingChildren are more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide, and overheating has been identified as a risk factor in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. When designing your nursery, install a smart thermostat that detects carbon monoxide and smoke to keep your baby safe.

5. Baby Proof

Prepare the nursery for a curious toddler by investing in cord shorteners for lamps and other electrical items as well as outlet covers that can’t be removed by little hands.

If you plan to use a gate, get one that screws directly into the door jamb. Tension-mounted gates don’t always hold up to a determined toddler.

Finally, install pinch guards on all of the doors and drawers to keep little fingers from getting stuck and injured.
