Back pain in general is a common occurrence, to the point where at least 60% of people experience it. It’s not unusual for it to be caused by disc problems. There’s a variety of conditions that can affect the discs such as herniations, bulges, arthritis, degeneration, and more. If these become symptomatic, they do tend to have similarities. By being aware of these, you’ll know when you should visit a doctor or chiropractor.

5 Signs That You Have a Disc Problem in Your Back

1. Arm or Leg Pain

back painBecause much of your nervous system is connected to your arms and legs, back pain can spread to these parts of the body when you have disc problems that irritate spinal nerves. If the issue originates in your upper back or neck, you’ll probably feel it in your arms; if it’s in the lower back, your legs will most likely be affected. The pain may worsen when you sleep, cough, sneeze, or move suddenly. It can also happen after sitting, walking, or standing for long periods.

2. Joint Issues

Since your discs are situated between your vertebrae and use your facet joints to move, injuries can cause stress on those joints. Degenerative disc disease, in particular, may exacerbate the pain and discomfort of osteoarthritis, making the joints more rigid and inflamed.

3. Muscle Weakness

Disc problems often push or pinch nerves in your spine, weakening the muscles associated with them. As with pain, this effect can radiate to your arms and legs as well. As a result, you may have difficulty walking, standing, or holding items.

4. Tingling or Burning

Sometimes, the nerves affected by the offending disc don’t cause weakness so much as a burning or tingling sensation, usually accompanied by aches. Although this may manifest itself as general back pain, it’s usually concentrated in the area where the disc is located. If you notice this symptom, see a doctor or chiropractor right away.

5. Numbness

There are times when disc problems remove your ability to feel anything. This typically occurs on the same side of your body as the nerves that are irritated by the injured disc. As with tingling or burning, it’s usually a sign that you need medical attention immediately, especially if it starts spreading to your arms or legs.
