When most people think about steel welding, they often consider construction or industrial work. However, there are several ways to incorporate welding in easy do-it-yourself projects that you can display around your home. If you’re interested in working with this material, here are a few simple jobs to get you started.

Easy Ways to Start Steel Welding

1. Pen Holder

This project creates a pen or pencil holder for your desk that’s both functional and decorative. As with all welding projects, you’ll need safety equipment, such as gloves and goggles, as well as a welder. You’ll also require a steel sheet, steel tubes, a hacksaw, and a file.

Begin by filing your steel tubes smooth, making sure they can stand upright on their own. Then, cut the steel sheet into a rectangle to act as your base for the holder. Position the tubes how you like on the sheet and weld them in place. Once complete, you can leave it in its raw, industrial form or paint it the color of your choosing.

2. Pot Rack

If you need more storage space in your kitchen, a hanging pot rack is a fantastic DIY project to undertake. For a simple hanging rack, you’ll need three pieces of steel: one long bar and two short bars of equal length. You’ll also need several threaded steel hooks, washers, and nuts, four short chains, and four drywall anchors.

First, attach a short metal piece to each end of the long bar facing upward and weld them together. For a clean look, grind down the welds. Next, drill evenly spaced holes along the bar to install hooks for pots and pans, and secure the hooks with a washer and nut on both sides. Finally, install the ceiling hooks, and use the short chains to connect the rack to your ceiling.

3. Spoon Flower

A spoon flower is a fun decor item for a garden or lawn. For this project, you’ll need eight spoons, a steel ladle, and a metal rod.

Arrange the spoons under the ladle cup. Then, cut the stems down until the spoon scoop and a little of the stem are visible behind the ladle. Next, weld the spoons in place to form flower petals. Once they’re in place, bend the spoons upward about 30 degrees and weld the back of the ladle to a metal rod that'll be inserted into the ground.
