Asphalt is a durable and economical material used to pave parking lots, driveways, and roadways. It can be susceptible to cracking due to temperature changes, soil conditions, and issues in the pavement construction process. Here's a closer look at how you can tell you may need surface repairs.

4 Types of Asphalt Cracks & How They Happen

1. Alligator Cracks

These cracks form a pattern on the asphalt pavement that resembles the skin of an alligator. This type of cracking develops from a weak or thin surface layer, base, or subgrade. As a result, the pavement cannot withstand the weight of vehicles and other heavy objects and quickly breaks apart.

2. Potholes

asphaltMany drivers have had a flat tire, damaged suspension, or wheel misalignment due to potholes. These cracks happen when water weakens the underlying structure of the asphalt pavement. Over time, traffic that passes over the surface breaks up and removes the pavement, leaving behind a bowl or pot-shaped depression.

3. Block Cracks

When asphalt pavement shrinks due to low temperatures, it can leave behind large, interconnected rectangular (or block-like) cracks on the surface. The cracks are usually between one foot squared and 100 feet squared in size. They are typically found in abandoned parking lots or roadways that get little traffic.

4. Linear Cracks

These are vertical cracks that usually run parallel to the center of a road. They form due to poor joint construction. Sometimes referred to as “panel cracks,” they can split up a roadway or pavement slab into multiple pieces.
