If you own or manage an asphalt basketball court, it’s important to practice proper maintenance year-round. Asphalt is durable, cost-effective, and easy to install, and with regular care, you can increase its lifespan while keeping it in excellent shape. Follow these three tips to get the most out of your court.

How to Maintain a Basketball Court

1. Clean it Regularly

An outdoor court will be exposed to weather elements and debris like dirt, rocks, leaves, and twigs from nearby trees. When the weather is hot, asphalt can soften, causing this debris to stick to the paving and make it uneven. Avoid this by sweeping the court regularly with a brisk brush. If your court is set up under a shaded area, it may accumulate moisture and gather moss. In this case, you’ll need to scrub the paving with bleach to kill the moss and hose the area down with water afterward.

2. Don’t Turn It Into a Parking Lot

asphaltWhile an asphalt basketball court may resemble a driveway, parking heavy vehicles on it will make the pavement deteriorate quickly. Vehicles leave behind unsightly skid marks and oil residue, both of which can be hard to remove. They can also cause cracking and surface depressions on the court, which will make it unsuitable for playing the game you love. Use the court for basketball only.

3. Paint & Seal It

Like all paving surfaces, asphalt will wear out over time. However, you can keep the court functional and looking good for longer by protecting it with sealcoating. Doing so stops water from penetrating and cracking the pavement. You’ll also need to paint the sidelines, baselines, free throw lines, and center circle regularly so that they are marked clearly. Your sealer will help to lock the paint in.
