Your new hardwood floors are an investment. If you take proper care of them, they will age beautifully and can last 25 years or longer. Maintenance includes refinishing annually, vacuuming weekly, and avoiding certain hazards. Here are a few tips to help you care for your flooring.

Do:

Use mats and curtains.

Put mats down to protect the floors from dirt and moisture. Place them in front of the kitchen sink, by the bathroom, and just inside the front door.

Consistent sunlight exposure is also damaging to flooring, as it dulls the finish and fades the wood’s color. Place area rugs by windows or use drapes to keep sunlight from streaming in and directly hitting the planks.

Invest in furniture protectors.

Made of felt or fabric, these go on the bottom of your furniture legs. They’ll keep your pieces from scratching the wood as you pull and move them.

Even if you have these protectors on, avoid dragging your items across the floor whenever possible. Instead, pick them up and carry them.

Don’t:

Clean with water.

palmer hardwoodWater can penetrate the pores of the wood and cause warping. Hot water is particularly damaging, since it can dissolve the finish and penetrate the planks more easily.

If you do use a wet cleaning solution or spill liquids, wipe puddles up within a minute. To clean safely, use a vacuum or dry mop.

Rely on harsh products.

Steel wool and straw brooms can also cause scratches, so use soft tools to clean. Avoid brush attachments on your vacuums.

You should also only apply cleaning solutions that are designed for finished hardwood, which will evaporate without compromising the finish.
