Even though most wells draw their water from deep in the ground where the earth insulates it, it’s not uncommon for them to freeze. If this happens, the pump cannot draw the water out and supply it to your home. That’s why well maintenance experts recommend the following precautions to prevent freezing from occurring.

Well Maintenance Tips to Avoid Freezing

1. Perform an Inspection

Before freezing temperatures set in, check the entire system for issues that make freezing more common. This includes drafty holes, broken windows, or missing insulation on the well house and pipes. Also, test that the pump is moving the water efficiently. It’s less likely to freeze while in motion. Doing this early in the season allows you to repair the well installation before it can freeze.

2. Keep Faucets On

To be effective, you don’t have to spray water constantly. Let faucets drip slightly to ensure that the water continues moving through the well and plumbing, decreasing the chances of the system freezing.

The most common method for insulating pipes is by wrapping either a flexible foam, bubble-film pipe wraps, or foil-backed natural cotton wrappings around them. You can also use a heat tape that produces enough heat to prevent the water from freezing.

4. Cover it Up

It’s a simple yet useful, well maintenance tip. Many people buy a fiberglass well house that covers the entirety, but during the winter, you should also use an insulated cover over the opening. This combination traps air and protects the well from the elements.

5. Use a Heat Lamp

This is typically only necessary if the well is exposed or you live in a severely cold climate. Install a lamp that is controlled by a thermostat and set it up inside of the well house. Set it to 45-50 degrees so that it won’t use too much electricity but keeps the water above freezing.
