Halitosis, also known as chronic bad breath, can be the result of more than just a few skipped tooth brushing sessions. While it’s true that food particles can easily be missed while brushing or flossing, causing an odor, this is rarely the cause of halitosis. Consistent bad breath affects both children and adults, and it can be embarrassing and difficult to remedy on your own. Luckily, a dentist can easily identify and treat this condition. Here’s what you should know.

Identifying the Cause of Halitosis

Dry Mouth

If your child gets an infection or allergy spell, they may have difficulty breathing through the nose or swallowing. This can result in mouth-breathing, which dries saliva and prevents it from carrying away odor-causing bacteria. Kids who play sports can also be susceptible to dry mouth if they are not drinking enough fluids and panting regularly. If not treated by a dentist, dry mouth can lead to more serious dental issues like tooth decay and cavities.

Tooth Decay or Gum Disease

If your child has a cavity that needs replacing or filling, it may be to blame for their breath. Cavities, gum disease, and even mouth sores can secrete fluid with an unpleasant smell. These conditions should be treated by a dentist as soon as possible to avoid the development of a more serious condition.

Upper Respiratory Infections

dentistSinus infections, colds, allergies, and other upper respiratory infections cause fluid to become trapped in the throat and nasal passages. If not drained, it can gather bacteria resulting in a musky smell. Similarly, swollen tonsils, or children with tonsillitis, will have the same symptoms.

Treating Chronic Bad Breath

For the above causes of halitosis, your child may need to visit a doctor for an evaluation and treatment. Upper respiratory infections may be treated with antibiotics. Dry mouth can be treated with antibiotics, mindfulness techniques, and adequate hydration. Tooth decay or gum disease will be treated at the discretion of and recommendation given by your child’s dentist.

Preventing It in the Future

Along with a healthy oral hygiene routine, make sure your child is drinking enough water and making an effort to breathe through their nose. If your child has bad breath from a nose or throat issue, schedule an appointment with a trusted ear, nose, and throat doctor. Also, be sure to schedule routine checkups with your child’s dentist every six months for a cleaning and an evaluation of any dental issues.
