Whether it’s a fishing boat, trawler, cabin cruiser, or yacht, if you own a marine vessel, you know that maintenance is essential. Boat generators are integral to your vessel’s functionality, especially in regards to the electrical components. If you’re wondering what you can do to keep it in good condition, take note of the following.

How to Make Boat Generators Last Longer

1. Run It Regularly

boat generatorsKeep your boat generator in running condition by starting your vessel regularly. If it’s idle for too long, the fluids, such as lubricants, will break down and compromise all the moving parts.

Of course, running the generator is easier to do when it’s sailing season. During the off-season, make an effort to run it weekly for at least half an hour. Furthermore, before turning on the major appliances like the heater, allow the generator to warm up for at least two minutes.

2. Inspect Your Boat

Check for leaks and damage often. Tighten loose components and don’t hesitate to repair, replace, or replenish minor components like the belt, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, coolant, and spark plugs. If you take the boat out on the water, clear the seawater strainer of any refuse it may have collected, since clogs can negatively impact performance.

3. Commit to a Service Schedule

Aside from minor repairs, make the time for significant, yet infrequent, maintenance like servicing the heat exchanger and replacing the coolant. These tasks should be done at least every two years. Also, if you haven’t logged too many hours on the water in the past year, the oil and its filter should be changed twice annually, during the spring and fall.
