Just like a car’s tires, brake pads, batteries, and air filters, the spark plug is a commonly replaced auto part. Although they can last for years, they can sustain damage, and eventually, they will wear out. If you’re unfamiliar with their purpose, warning signs, and replacement schedule, here’s what you need to know.

What Does It Do?

auto partsSpark plugs are an essential aspect of an internal combustion engine. This system is what converts liquid fuel into power. These engines have pistons connected to cylinders, which are filled with a combination of fuel and air. The spark plugs are located at the top of these cylinders. There’s one for every cylinder of the engine. Therefore, if you have four cylinders, you’ll have four spark plugs. As the name suggests, when these auto parts are activated, such as when the ignition switch is turned on, they create a spark that provides heat and causes combustion. This reaction pushes the pistons, which power the engine.

When Should You Replace It?

Spark plugs can last for several years until they start to become inefficient and more prone to misfiring. Generally speaking, they can usually last about 30,000 miles before they should be replaced. However, like any other auto part, different types have different lifespans. For example, spark plugs made from platinum can last much longer, up to 100,000 miles, than those made with common metals like copper. When in doubt, refer to your car’s owner’s manual for the recommended replacement schedule.

What Are the Warning Signs?

The most obvious indicator of a damaged or malfunctioning spark plug is starter trouble. Bizarre noises like rattling or knocking could also point to a spark plug misfiring and causing the pistons to move irregularly. Assuming there isn’t an issue with the tires or brake pads, other possibilities of worn-out spark plugs are poor performance and fuel economy.
