When it comes to car upgrades, there’s not much more practical than a rearview camera installation. If you want to maneuver a trailer with ease or back into a tight spot without hitting anything, this device will keep you safety-conscious whenever your car is in reverse. Before you choose a model, though, it helps to know what features are best for your vehicle and driving habits. Here’s a closer look at three factors that will narrow down your selection.

How to Decide Between Rearview Cameras

1. Wired or Wireless?

Wireless systems are generally cheaper than wired systems, but as is the case with most products, you get what you pay for. Even the highest-quality wireless camera will provide you with less-than-stellar picture quality. In addition, all wireless devices are subject to interference, so you can’t always count on them. For this reason, opt for a wired camera if you can.

2. Day or Night?

rear-view-camerasMost high-quality cameras can provide a picture in low-light settings, but not all of them can help you see in near or total darkness. If you do a lot of night driving, opt for a camera with infrared night vision. Look for models that offer infrared illumination of 10 to 30 feet.

3. CCD or CMOS?

Rearview cameras use one of two types of image sensors: a charged couple device (CCD) or a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS). CCD image sensors are superior to CMOS models in terms of both quality and utility. They transfer images from the lens and through the processor at a higher resolution. They’re also more durable and typically come equipped with better night vision due to the higher number of pixels.

If a camera you’re considering doesn’t explicitly boast that it uses CCD sensors, it’s wisest to assume it doesn’t. Since the price difference between CCD and CMOS is usually pretty negligible, the best choice for most drivers will be the former.
