As a dog owner, you may be considering expanding your family by introducing another four-legged friend to the mix. Having two dogs allows your canines to enjoy a special bond and years of companionship. To ensure the introduction goes off without a hitch, give both dogs the pet care they deserve. Here are three helpful tips.

How to Successfully Introduce a Second Dog Into Your Household

1. Consider Receptivity

Although you may be ready to introduce another dog into the family, your first canine companion may not. Some dogs are highly social; whereas others prefer to be the one and only. To help test their inclination to receive a new pet, bring your first to a dog park. Pay attention to their interactions with other dogs. Encourage positive behavior and play. If this experience is less than satisfactory, work with a trainer to acclimate your dog to the idea of a companion.

2. Choose a Complementary Companion

If, for example, you have a small breed, such as a toy poodle, avoid a Great Dane to prevent potential injuries. Personality plays a significant role as well. If your first dog is an alpha male, for example, don’t add another highly assertive dog to the mix. It will likely create tension.

3. Establish a Neutral Environment

The first introduction between two dogs can help set the stage for a successful relationship. Have them meet outside your home in a fenced-off and neutral environment. Invite a friend or partner. Each of you can hold one of the leashes. Allow the dogs to interact, but do so a bit cautiously so neither feels overwhelmed.

If the dogs are especially excited to meet each other, have them walk off some energy before regrouping. If either acts aggressive or seems tense, separate them, and consider discussing next steps with a trusted pet care professional.
