It can be tricky to find a balance between using your heater to stay comfortable during the winter and keeping your energy bill low. Fortunately, by applying a few simple changes to your routine, you can keep your house warm without paying a fortune. Implement the following four tips to ensure your family’s comfort while also saving on heating costs.

4 Ways to Keep Your Heating Bill Low

1. Keep the Cold Out

Your heater doesn’t have to expend much energy if your home retains heat effectively. If you find any cracks in your walls, doors, baseboards, windows, pipes, or electrical outlets, block them, either by caulking them or filling them with spray foam insulation. For good measure, apply weather stripping your windows as well and hang heavy floor-to-ceiling curtains on them. Block drafts from unused rooms by stuffing the bottoms of the doors with blankets or towels.

2. Get a Programmable Thermostat

heaterFor more precise control over your heater, use a programmable thermostat. Set the thermostat to automatically lower the temperature when you’re not home and raise it shortly before you return. Doing so makes it easy to prevent wasting energy on heating. Keep the temperature hovering in the 60s while you’re sleeping.

3. Bundle Up

By wearing layers of warm clothes like long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, comfortable pants, and thick socks, you’re less likely to feel the need to use your heater the whole time you’re home. For extra warmth, wrap yourself in thick, clean blankets, drinking warm beverages, and warm up a rice sock to place around your neck, against your back, on your feet, or between your hands.

4. Practice Proper Maintenance

Your heater may be working harder than it should due to issues with your HVAC system. Change the filter every two or three months to ensure that the heater isn’t trying to push air through a thick layer of dust, dirt, and debris.

If you’re still experiencing issues, ask an HVAC technician to come over and make sure everything is working properly. If any heater repairs are necessary, they’ll take care of it then so that you can save on your bills later. They can also help with vent and duct cleaning and unclogging so that nothing is blocking the warmth.
