When visiting an eye care specialist for an eye exam, an optometrist may ask questions about habits that may ruin your vision. Here’s what you need to know about refraining from daily habits and rituals that may negatively impact your eye health.

4 Habits Eye Care Professionals Discourage

1. Sleeping in Contact Lenses

Corrective contact lenses should always be removed before bedtime. To give your eyes a break, prevent dryness, and reduce your risk of contracting an eye infection, don’t go to sleep before removing your contacts.

2. Excessive Screen Time

SmaEye Carertphones, laptops, tablets, and televisions dominate our work and social lives. Your eyes spend a significant amount of time straining to read small text and absorb images. Excessive screen time may lead to eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, dry eyes, and irritation in both children and adults. As such, taking screen breaks and reducing screen time is highly recommended by eye care experts.

3. Forgetting to Wear Sunglasses

Ongoing exposure to the sun’s harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays may damage your eyes, leading to macular degeneration, cataracts, and even blindness. To avoid sun-related eye damage, wear sunglasses year-round when outdoors.

4. Poor Makeup Routine

Although wearing eye makeup boosts confidence and accentuates your look, mishandling makeup may lead to infection, irritation, and inflammation due to the bacteria and harmful substances often found in these products. To protect your eyes, avoid sharing makeup with other people, and always replace products every three months. Also, use eye makeup only as directed and thoroughly remove makeup before bedtime.
