Damage to a fence can compromise your privacy, safety, and security. Depending on what caused the damage, the cost of repairs or replacement may be covered by your homeowners insurance. Learn more about when policies typically cover such damage and how to go about filing a claim.

When Fence Damage Is Covered

There are two types of coverage that can possibly protect a fence. One is the coverage for "other structures" in your existing homeowners insurance policy; the other is an optional additional type of coverage for "unscheduled structures" that you purchased along with standard homeowners insurance.

The extent and nature of fence damage covered by each will vary from carrier to carrier, so check your policy carefully to see exactly what your plan encompasses.

Ihomeowner's insurancen general, most "other structures" coverage protects a fence from the same type of events that the larger policy protects the home itself against, such as storm damage, vehicle damage, fire, and vandalism. "Unscheduled structures" policies may offer some additional protections. Each will pay up to the coverage limits stated on the policy, depending on the extent of the damage. Mold issues, termite damage, and normal wear and tear are typically not covered.

How to File a Claim

To file a claim, take photos of the destruction. Write out a detailed description of what happened and the extent of the damage. Only clean up the damage if it presents a hazard on your property.

Next, have a fence professional provide an estimate for repair or replacement. Once you have all this information, contact your insurer and inform them of the incident. They will provide you with the necessary forms to fill out.

After you've completed the paperwork and submitted it, an adjuster will come and survey the damage. Based on their findings and your policy limits, the insurer will then let you know how much they will cover.
