Weather conditions tend to make driving difficult during the winter. Tires can’t maintain traction on slippery roads, and snow can reduce visibility. While a towing service can get your vehicle out of a bad scrape, it’s best to take the necessary precautions. Consider the following do’s and don’ts to stay safe.

Do:

Slow down.

Obey speed limit laws. If road conditions are poor, drive slower as consistent with safety. To avoid the pressure to rush, give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

When approaching an intersection, start slowing down a few extra feet before you actually have to come to a stop to prevent sliding.

Top off your fuel tank.

towing serviceIt’s never smart to drive when the needle is hovering above empty, but it’s especially risky in the winter. If you get stranded and need a towing service, you may need to run your car's motor to stay warm and comfortable while you wait. Keep your tank at least half full at all times.

Don’t:

Make sudden movements.

Last-minute turns aren’t easy when now and ice are on the road. Abrupt shifts increase your chances of losing traction. Prepare for the motion by slowing down several feet before the turn. Go slowly all the way through to ensure that you stay on the road.

Let your wiper fluid get too low.

Visibility is of utmost importance during adverse weather conditions. If you run out of wiper fluid, the wipers won’t be able to keep your windshield clean effectively. Use high-potency formulas created for winter conditions. If you haven’t already topped off this season, do so now and check the level once a month or so. Keep an extra bottle in the trunk in the event that you need a refill while out on the road.
