The beginning of 2020 is a time to set new goals. If you’re living with Parkinson’s disease, the new year provides an excellent opportunity to stay motivated and inspired. With a little determination and support from your family and friends, you can fill 2020 with memories you’ll always cherish.

How to Commit to a Positive New Year

1. Practice Self-Love

Leave limiting beliefs in the past, and move into the new year with a positive and self-appreciating outlook. Focus on the positives in your life, such as the people supporting you or the beauty of nature. Consider exploring meditation, as the practice can help you find a deeper sense of inner peace. Remember to keep your thoughts and actions positive, even if it seems difficult. Inspirational videos and podcasts provide easily accessible sources of positive motivation.

2. Exercise Regularly

Parkinson's diseaseWhile Parkinson’s disease has significant physical effects, incorporating healthy exercise routines into your daily routine early on will improve flexibility and mobility while reducing physical pain. Find at least one activity that you enjoy, such as swimming, yoga, or bowling, and commit a small block of time each day to this activity. Exercises that let you monitor your progress will inspire you to be consistent and dedicated.

3. Be Curious

Parkinson’s disease doesn’t have to take away your sense of wonder. Curiosity will keep your brain stimulated and create a passion for discovering new things. Learn about the causes of your condition and treatment options to set some healthy goals for your future. Try things you’ve never done. Explore new books, movies, and music. Try foods you’ve never heard of, or book front-row seats at the opera.
