A hot water heater provides ready access to warm water whenever a tap anywhere in the home requests it. From washing dishes and cooking, to doing laundry and showering, hot water is essential to daily life. It's not surprising, then, that a broken water heater can make everyday tasks impossible. To prevent any disruption to your household, be mindful of some of the common signs that a new hot water heater may be in order.

When to Get a New Hot Water Heater

1. The Water Heater Is Old

Most water heaters last up to 15 years before they start to show signs of age, such as sluggish heat production or burned-out heating elements. If you can’t remember the last time you replaced it and have noticed any issues, it might be time to upgrade to a newer model. To find out when the heater was last replaced, check the serial number on the unit. The first two numbers often denote the year the heater was manufactured.

2. Household Water Is Rusty

If the water appears clear but has detectable metallic taste or odor, rust could still be present. In some cases, a hot water heater rusting on the inside will cause this to happen. If rust is only apparent when running hot water and not cold, the water heater is likely the cause, and it's time for a new unit.

3. There Are Leaks Around the Unit

Check around the water heater itself for any running water or standing leaks. If there are leaks, a fitting may need tightening. It could also be an indicator that the structure of the inner tank is starting to break down and can no longer hold water. At this point, replacement should be a priority, as leaking whenever you use hot water could result in significant property damage, dangerous conditions, and mold growth. Always call a plumber at the first instance of a water heater leak.
