Any vehicle registered in New York State (NYS) must be inspected by a professional every 12 months. Auto mechanics use a series of required tests to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road. If you’re preparing for an appointment, here are answers to a few questions you may have about the process.

A Guide to New York State Inspections

What do auto mechanics look for during these?

Inspections are performed to ensure vehicles are safe to drive. The brake system, tires, steering, suspension, lights, and windshield are among the many components that will be checked for damage. Interior safety features will also be assessed, such as seatbelts and airbag warning lights.

What is an emissions inspection?

auto mechanicNew York requires emissions to be tested to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles. To do this, the professional will check the components that create combustion, such as the catalytic converter and air injection system. If there are any malfunctions, the car could produce a higher level of emissions. The mechanic will repair these so your vehicle passes the inspection.

What happens if I don’t get my car checked?

Without a valid inspection sticker on your vehicle, you will be unable to renew its registration. You’ll also be subject to fines and penalties, including parking tickets if the expired sticker is seen by police officers.

Can I get an extension?

Yes, and filing for an extension will save you a costly ticket. If your vehicle is out of state when your existing sticker expires, you can contact the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles for an extension sticker. You’ll need to provide your contact information, out-of-state address, and information on your vehicle. They’ll send you a temporary sticker you can use.

Don’t put the sticker up until you return to New York. Instead, keep it inside the vehicle and provide it to the police if you’re pulled over. Once you return to New York, you have ten days to have the vehicle inspected.
