If you need to replace your home’s water heater, the number of options available can feel overwhelming. Choosing a reliable, energy-efficient, and practical water heater can be challenging. Understanding some of the key differences between direct vent and power vent models can help you reach a decision.

Direct Vent Water Heaters

With a direct vent water heater, water is warmed via the heat created by burning fuel. However, that process also creates combustion gases, which need to be vented. With this style of heater, those gases are naturally vented outside through the chimney or an exhaust vent directly connected to the appliance. Because warm air is lighter than cold air, the warm combustion gases naturally rise out of those openings.

Direct vent water heaters can only be used in homes that have a chimney or other vertical vent. Because the gases vent naturally and don’t require power to run an exhaust fan, the overall costs may be lower.

Power Vent Water Heaters

water heaterThe other common type of water heater is a power vent model. These also heat water via combustion. However, rather than allowing the combustion gases to vent naturally, they’re directed out of the house using an electric powered fan or blower. Since the exhaust is pushed out, there’s no need for a vertical vent or chimney. The water heater can be connected to any exhaust pipe leading outside, allowing for more flexibility for the location. For instance, if you want to install the appliance in a utility closet that isn’t near the chimney, or if you don't have a chimney, a direct vent heater may be your only option.

Besides the method of ventilation, the main difference between direct and power vent heaters is the power usage. Direct vent heaters need electricity to operate. In addition, direct vent heaters can be noisier than other options because of the exhaust fan. However, proper installation generally prevents any noticeable noise.
