An asphalt roof will only last about two decades even with proper maintenance. If you’ve hired a roofer to replace your shingles, you will soon enjoy the comfort of more solid protection from the elements, as well as lower utility bills due to superior insulation. To make installation run as smoothly as possible, follow the advice below.

How to Prepare for Roof Replacement

1. Keep Children & Pets Safe

Workers will not only be making loud noises that may startle your kids and pets, but they will need to strip the roof of old shingles, which can make outdoor areas dangerous. Therefore, keep them indoors or make alternative arrangements for them during roof replacement.

2. Give Neighbors a Heads Up

Just as your family might be disturbed by the noise, so might your neighbors. Out of courtesy, inform them of your project and the approximate timeframe. This allows them time to plan their activities and heads off any complaints.

3. Trim Trees & Grass

Prune tree branches that hang near or over your house before the roofers arrive to avoid them scraping the surface during high winds. Cut the grass so that any fallen debris is visible and can be cleaned up quickly once the work is complete.

roofer4. Remove Satellite Dishes

Contact your cable or satellite provider and ask them to take down any satellite dishes or antennas on your roof. Once the new roof is in place, call the company to reinstall it. If you have an old satellite dish that is not working anymore, the roofer can remove this for you and throw it away.

5. Protect Your Belongings

In addition to parking your car away from the likely path of any falling debris, move your barbeque grill and patio furniture indoors or cover them with tarps.

Since the vibrations of the work can shake walls, you should also remove mirrors and any artwork you have hung up inside to stop them from falling. Items in the attic should be protected from falling dust with dropcloths.
