To make fewer trips to the pump to fill up the tank, many consumers choose diesel trucks over gasoline-powered models. To maintain fuel efficiency and increase performance, however, regular upkeep is required. To learn how to care for your diesel ride, put these 3 points on a maintenance checklist.

3 Diesel Truck Maintenance Tips

1. Fuel Filters

Situated between the fuel tank and the engine is a primary filter. It cleans impurities from the fuel before it’s directed to the fuel transfer pump. Closer to the engine, a second filter gives your fuel another round of cleaning before it heads to the fuel injectors. When filters are dirty, debris can reach the engine and cause blockages. To reduce the risk of damage, refer to the owner’s manual and change your fuel filters per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

2. Coolant Level & Quality

diesel trucksCoolant protects the engine from extreme temperatures. Driving with low levels could damage engine heads and gaskets, corrode pistons, and force the engine block to seize.

If it’s time to replenish, a low coolant warning light on the dashboard will illuminate for a few seconds when you start the engine. When the antifreeze breaks down and sulfates get in the liquid, your coolant may become acidic. To avoid engine corrosion, have a diesel truck service technician check your coolant every six months to determine if it needs replacing.

3. Exhaust System

Exhaust system problems can reduce gas mileage and lead to back pressure—a condition that prevents an engine from efficiently expelling spent combustion gases. Exposure to the elements and driving over rough roads may cause components to wear prematurely. The smell of gas inside a diesel truck or an illuminated check engine light could point to an exhaust problem. From the rear of the vehicle, check the exhaust pipe for damage, and ask a mechanic to put your truck on a lift to further investigate.
