During the wintertime, family get-togethers, tubing trips, and a million little distractions may keep you from paying attention to household maintenance tasks. However, if you don’t make your heating and cooling system a priority, you could end up with an HVAC system that doesn’t endure the season. Here are a few tips for maintaining your furnace this winter.

A Guide to Wintertime Heating & Cooling Care

1. Change the Filter

During the winter, your family may spend most of their free time indoors, unintentionally creating indoor pollutants. From snowmelt and cooking fumes to pet dander and lint from washing and drying clothing, your indoor air filter can fill up fast during the winter months. Change your furnace filter at least once every three to six months to maintain air quality, improve airflow, and prevent premature system failure. Inspect it regularly for grime, and replace it when dirty.

2. Clean Air Returns

3. Adjust the Thermostat

Check your thermostat regularly during wintertime to make sure the settings are correct. To reduce energy use, lower the setting when you’re asleep or away at work. Don’t turn off your furnace in winter to prevent pipes from freezing, and avoid dropping it below the 60-degree mark.
