Since cold air is less capable of holding humidity, you might find yourself with dry, brittle hair during the frigid winter months. From struggling with cracked, flaky skin to burning through lotions and creams, it can be hard to know how to manage dryness. Here are three tips to avoid dry skin this winter, and how simple changes, such as putting on lotion or having a chemical face peel, can help.

3 Ways to Prevent Dry Skin During Winter

1. Apply Moisturizer Quickly

Moisturizer can create a barrier between your skin, cold, dry air, and environmental irritants. However, moisturizer can also trap in moisture absorbed during bathing or showering, which is why dermatologists recommend applying moisturizer immediately following a shower or bath, while your skin is still slightly damp. Keep moisturizer in the bathrooms where you shower or bathe, and put it on as quickly as possible when you get out.

2. Consider a Chemical Peel

Chemical face peels are available in three strengths: superficial, medium, and deep peels. The deeper the chemical face peel, the more dead skin it removes. Talk with your dermatologist about your skin care goals, and whether your skin is too sensitive for a peel.

3. Use a Humidifier

While you can’t do much about the forecast outside, you can improve air conditions inside your home by using a cool-mist humidifier. These inexpensive, easy-to-use systems add humidity to the air, reducing static, skin dryness, and the tendency for hair to become brittle. Purchase both a humidifier and a hygrometer, which measures the relative humidity inside your home. For healthy skin and hair, aim to keep humidity levels between 30% and 40%
