When you find that your water isn’t running through your pipes and out of your faucets as strongly as you’d prefer, it might be time for a well inspection to find the source of the problem. However, a little investigation may be possible first, and you may be able to fix the problem on your own. Here’s a closer look at how to tackle low water pressure.

What’s the Difference Between Low Pressure & Low Flow?

When you have multiple water pipes that are sometimes used at the same time—for example, perhaps you’re washing dishes in the kitchen sink while someone else is in the shower—this could be a sign that your well isn’t pumping enough gallons of water into the pipes to accommodate the demand, so it could be a case of low flow. If it only seems to happen at certain times of the day, that’s additional proof.

However, if the water constantly comes out at a trickle or not at all, low pressure could be the problem. Sometimes the plumbing is at fault. A blockage within a pipe, aerator, filter, or faucet could be the cause—or the pipe could be broken altogether. It’s also possible that the well is just old or corroded, which may necessitate a new water system installation. Consult a well inspection specialist to find out for sure.

How Do You Identify & Resolve the Issue?

well inspectionIf you’re certain that low pressure is the problem, check the tank’s gauge. Raise the pressure if the gauge says the tank is operating below 40 pounds per square inch, though be careful not to raise it higher than 60 PSI unless a professional recommends it.

Alternatively, you could install a constant pressure system on the water line. This causes the water pump to work faster when more pipes or faucets are open. Otherwise, you may simply need to invest in a better pump.

Could the pipes be getting plugged with sediment or other debris from the well? Does trash or insoluble leftover food ever go down the garbage disposal or other drains? If so, the water may have difficulty navigating the blockage, which will lower the pressure. For clogged pipes, try pouring drain cleaner or boiling water and baking soda inside them or call a plumber to help. Either way, you may need to have a professional conduct a well inspection to pinpoint the precise problem.
