When you’re planning on moving to a new home, remember that Hawaii’s greatest amount of rainfall occurs between November and March. With the proper preparation, a rainy day won’t put a damper on your relocation. These tips will help you maintain a sunny disposition and keep precious possessions dry.

3 Ways to Improve Rainy Day Moving

1. Wrap Items in Plastic

Plastic protects cardboard packing boxes from dampness. Fill the boxes, seal them with water-resistant tape, and wrap them in clear plastic. Shrink wrap works well for shielding blanket-covered items such as mattresses, chairs, tables, and wall art.

Use heavy-duty trash bags to pack and transport clothing and small electronics. Cover larger items with padding, then wrap them in tarps. Plastic bins, tubs, and containers with lids provide sturdy enclosures, keeping rain out of various household goods and personal items.

2. Place Items Close to the Exit

movingAfter you pack your belongings and mark the boxes with their contents and where they should go, gather them in a central location as close to the exit as possible. Grouping your items this way allows you to get them out of the house quickly without going back and forth, tracking rainwater into different rooms.

3. Avoid Slips With Cardboard

To protect the flooring and avoid slips, designate a pathway for moving items in and out of the house. Tape cardboard down on the walkway to keep walking surfaces such as tiled or waxed floors from becoming slick and protect wood from water damage.

Use the same strategy when unloading the moving truck into your new residence to reduce the possibility of tracking dirt or mud inside.
