There are many tasks to do before you begin packing your house, and decluttering should be one of them. Although it can seem overwhelming, this process will make moving quicker and easier. After you hire movers and set your moving day, start decluttering your home with these five tips.

How to Declutter Your Home

1. Stop Buying

Unless what you need to buy is a necessity, like food or toilet paper, avoid stockpiling more items until you move. If you have stored any supplies, start using them up a month before the move.

2. Start Immediately

As soon as you have set the day your movers will arrive to collect your boxes, start decluttering your house. Your belongings may take time to sort through and discard, and doing so last-minute may mean moving with miscellaneous items that you don’t need or want. Make the transition easier by getting a head start.

3. Donate Clothing

moversMost people have clothing in their closet they haven’t used in months. Decide whether or not you’ll wear them again; if you won’t, donate them to charity. If they are in good condition, you may be able to sell them to offset moving costs.

4. Clean By Room

When packing, try to go room-to-room — you’ll feel accomplished when one part of your home is done. Start by removing unnecessary items from second bedrooms or offices, places you use but not often. Then, go to the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom and pack the belongings you can live without for a few weeks.

5. Ask For Help

Decluttering can be a stressful and emotional experience, so having a friend or loved one there to spend time with can make it easier. They can also be a sounding board about what you need and what you can live without.
