Having frozen desserts after dinner is a nightly tradition in many homes. But buying pints of ice cream can be expensive, and the sugary ingredients can cause weight gain. Instead, get bagged ice and make your own frozen creations at home. Here are a few simple recipes to add to the rotation.

3 Frozen Desserts to Make at Home

1. Sorbet

Sorbet is a refreshing alternative to ice cream. Although similar in texture to the classic dessert, sorbet doesn’t contain cream.

To make it, put sugar in a saucepan with water and bring it to a boil to create a syrup. Pour the cooled syrup over chopped fruit in a blender. After blending, drain the excess liquid, and stir in lemon juice.

Once the mixture chills in the fridge, you can churn it in an ice cream maker. Put in a few cubes of the bagged ice as the sorbet churns to add a rough texture to the smooth mixture.

2. Smoothies

All you’ll need is a blender, bagged ice, and a few favorite fruits—or vegetables if you want more nutrients. Greek yogurt or milk will make the smoothie creamier, while natural fruit juices or coconut water will give it a slushy-like texture.

3. Shave Ice

Shave ice is easy to make and a refreshing treat to help you cool down on a hot day. Put some bagged ice in a food processor to shave it down until it looks like snow. Scoop the ice into a bowl or paper cone and pour fruit juice or a low-sugar syrup on top.
