Pressure washing effectively removes dirt and breathes new life into concrete. If the equipment isn’t used properly, however, the intense jet of water can degrade paving materials. Before you get started, review these five key tips to get the job done right.

How to Pressure-Wash Concrete

1. Prepare the Area

Before you begin, protect outlets, doorways, and walls by covering them with plastic. Clear the area you plan to clean by removing any patio furniture, toys, vehicles, and outdoor equipment that may obstruct the hose. Remove any large debris, such as rocks or sticks, which could become airborne and harm you or your property.

2. Use the Appropriate Nozzle

Using the wrong size nozzle can chip away at concrete or mortar, leaving unsightly scarring and requiring repairs. When selecting your nozzle, remember that the higher the number, the gentler the spray. For concrete, consider the 25-degree nozzle. If you need to remove tough stains like grease, a finer 15-degree option is also acceptable.

3. Pre-Treat Stains

Some stains, such as grease and oil, require more than a blast of water to remove. Consider pre-treating with a concrete detergent. Allow the detergent to soak for at least five minutes before scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush. Finish by rinsing with your pressure washer. Always follow any provided instructions on the product’s bottle.

4. Start at the Top & Keep Moving

pressure washingMost concrete slabs are at least slightly sloped, allowing water to run off to one side rather than pooling in the center. To begin, position yourself in the center of the area to be cleaned, then begin spraying from the top down. Keep the nozzle moving in one direction to avoid possible etching and surface damage. When cleaning driveways, begin at the top and spray toward the street to avoid ricocheting debris or pooling.

5. Keep Your Distance

To avoid damaging your concrete surfaces, provide at least 10 feet of space between you and the area you're cleaning until you see how the surface reacts. As you assess your concrete's ability to withstand the pressure, adjust the distance between you and the surface you're cleaning. Maintain a minimum distance of 3 feet.
