Is your garage door refusing to open or close? Not only can this be frustrating if you are trying to leave in your car, but a jam can also pose a security risk. Likely, professionals will find one of the following reasons to be the culprit.

What Causes Garage Doors to Catch?

1. Manual Lock

Before calling a repair person, verify that no manual locks have accidentally been engaged. For example, some garage doors that operate on a remote have a lock button on the wall unit that can override the system. This is used when homeowners plan to be gone from their property for an extended period.

2. Damaged Opener Engine

If grinding sounds emerge from the garage door, then it’s likely there’s an issue with its opener engine, specifically, its main drive gear. Usually made of lightweight plastic, its teeth can wear down with time, requiring replacement.

3. Faulty Sensors

garage doorTo prevent automatic garage doors from inadvertently closing on a vehicle or person, the U.S. government requires all manufacturers to install safety devices on their overhead door systems. This usually takes the form of photo eye sensors on either side of the doorway. If their visual contact is broken by an obstruction, then the garage door stops in its tracks. If these sensors are malfunctioning or out of alignment, it can cause the garage door to get stuck. Typically in such a scenario, one or both of the sensor lights will start blinking to notify you of the problem.

4. Broken Springs

Garage door springs are like the system’s arms and conduct the door’s physical operation. Over time, repetitively shouldering the door’s weight can break the springs. Torsion springs are located near the top of the door, while extension springs are located to either side. However, since a lot of pressure is stored behind them, checking on them is a dangerous job that is best left to an expert.

5. Obstructed or Off Track

If your door comes off the tracks, it can cause serious damage. You’ll likely notice that the rollers are coming out of their spool or that the garage door is hanging precariously. Wait elsewhere for professionals to address the problem.
