As a parent, you likely monitor many aspects of your child's life. However, one issue you may not consider is their fluoride consumption. When kids consume excess fluoride as permanent teeth form beneath the gums, they can develop fluorosis. While this medical condition is harmless, it can lead to discoloration and pitted surfaces on their teeth. If you have young children or grandchildren with baby teeth, follow these tips to prevent fluorosis before scheduling an appointment with their dentist.

How to Help Your Children Avoid Dental Fluorosis

1. Monitor Their Use of Fluoride Toothpaste

Using fluoride toothpaste helps prevent cavities, but if your kids are ingesting too much of it, fluorosis may develop. Children younger than 36 months should only use a tiny bit of toothpaste—about the size of a rice grain. A dollop of toothpaste the size of a pea is enough for kids older than three years. Also, make sure your children rinse their mouths and spit out the paste rather than swallowing it.

2. Pay Attention to Local Water Sources

dentistMany municipalities provide commercially fluoridated water to their residents, and some areas also have water sources that contain fluoride naturally. Ask about the water content and standards in your community, and get your well tested if you have one. Finally, talk to your kids' dentist about what fluoride levels are appropriate.

3. Balance Fluoride-Enhanced Drinks & Supplements

If your children or grandchildren drink fluoridated water and other beverages enhanced with fluoride frequently, they may be getting too much in their systems. Take note of the fluoride content of drinks they consume and reduce it if necessary, especially if they're also taking prescribed fluoride supplements.
