Whether it is a necklace or an engagement ring, jewelry is meant to make a personal statement. Instead of just browsing through what is available at the store, consider getting yourself or your loved one a custom piece that reflects your—or their—personality. The guide below looks at the process involved with making one-of-a-kind jewelry with a story behind it.

What Happens During the Custom Jewelry Design Process?

1. Consultation

You will meet with an expert jeweler to discuss the ideas you have in mind. Do you want to incorporate specific stones because of their symbolic meanings? What sort of metal do you think will bring the piece together and also complement the wearer’s skin tone and personal preferences? Other considerations include the clarity, cut, and color of the gems. The jeweler will be able to answer any questions and provide advice and guidance.

2. Sketches

Sketches may be drawn based on your described wishes, or you can bring in your own sketches to help express your creative ideas. Once you and your jeweler are on the same page you will have the option of having a CAD made.

jewelry3. CAD Rendering

A computer-aided design (CAD) is a photo-like image with exact measurements. It can give you a realistic idea of how the piece will look upon completion. The CAD takes a few days to create, but once it’s available adjustments can be made to the design if needed.

4. Wax Model

This is a completely optional step! Usually the detailed CAD does a great job itself, but some clients prefer to see and try on a wax model of the jewelry piece to get a better idea of size and wearability.

5. Cast & Create

After the jeweler receives approval to move forward then the piece can be cast; liquid metal is poured into a mold to create the shape of your piece before the final touches are added. Additional detailing would be done by hand, like stone setting for example. Once it has been inspected for quality, the jewelry is cleaned and polished to perfection and ready to go!

6. Engraving

This step is also optional; many people like to make the ring or necklace that much more personal by adding an engraving. Popular inscriptions include significant dates in one’s life, short quotes, or a person’s name. If you choose to have an engraving on your custom jewelry piece then this would be the last and final step.
