The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends girls have their first gynecology exam between the ages of 13 and 15. These confidential appointments provide a variety of services related to sexual activity, birth control, reproductive health, and family planning. Routine screenings for as-yet detected cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are also performed during annual exams, and treatment for many common gynecological conditions is dispensed.

What to Expect

First, you’ll have an initial consultation, in which you’ll be asked basic questions about your family medical history and your sexual activity. A consultation is also an excellent time to ask any questions you may have about the exam. 

When the physical exam begins, your doctor will first most likely check your height, weight, and blood pressure. Next, they’ll manually inspect your breasts for abnormalities and conduct a pelvic exam. During a pelvic examination, a doctor will assess your labia and vagina, and, using gloved fingers, will examine your internal organs, including your uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. If you’re 18 or over, you’ll likely receive a Pap smear—a test that detects signs of precancerous and cancerous cervical cells.
