Also known as e-bikes, electric bikes offer an alternative to traditional bikes and other two-wheeled transportation options such as mopeds and scooters. Learn more about these unique rides to determine if it sounds right for your vacation or other transportation needs. If you don’t want to buy, you can opt for electric bike rental services.

How Does It Differ From A Standard Bike?

Electric bikes look like regular bikes except for three key differences: a battery pack, drive train, and motor. The battery usually sits on the back of the bike behind the seat and above the rear wheel and offers up to 60 miles per charge to either help the rider with pedaling or provide full power.

A back wheel motor spins the back wheel to provide a “pushing” sensation that propels the bike forward. If you’re riding a bike with a central mid-drive motor, you’ll notice a more even distribution of power.

Located on the center of the rear wheel, the drivetrain receives power from the motor to assist manual wheel turning. Drivetrains provide torque and power to turn the wheels and either increase or decrease pedaling difficulty, depending on the rider’s preferences.

How Does It Work?

Electric bike rentals come in three classes that provide motorized assistance from 20 to 28 miles an hour. All electric bikes require battery charging that takes two to eight hours, depending on quality.

The battery and motor provide varying degrees of power in light of the bike type and your riding needs. They help you ride up hills and other difficult terrain as well as provide pedal assistance or full electric power with a twist of the throttle, which turns the bike into a moped.
