It’s not uncommon for an iPhone® to fall into water. It happens to many people at some point, and most of the time, it’s hard to prevent. Before you need to head to an iPhone repair professional, there are steps you can take at home to avoid damage. Here’s what you need to know.

3 Steps to Take if You Drop Your iPhone® in Water

1. Turn It Off

It can be hard to remain calm in these situations, but turn off your phone immediately, and avoid starting it up again. The water conductivity can short circuit your phone’s electronics, damaging it. The electricity in your phone won’t travel through its intended path. Instead, the power will flow freely through the circuit board, causing it to malfunction.

2. Dry It With a Towel

iPhone RepairUse a soft cloth or a towel to gently wipe away any remaining water. Don’t remove the battery, as you might damage the interior due to improper handling. Leave removing any parts to the professionals. If water only touched your device briefly, the circuit boards might still be unaffected.

3. Put it in a Rice Container

Fill a bowl with dry rice and submerge the entire phone. The rice should wrap it on every side. Next, place the container in direct sunlight. The sun will heat the bowl, and the rice will soak up the extra moisture. Leave the phone in there for a few days to give the rice enough time to soak up any excess moisture. After a couple of days, turn your phone on to check if it’s working properly.
