Even in the South, there are some frigid nights throughout the winter, and homeowners rely on their furnaces to stay cozy. Unfortunately, poorly maintained heating systems can break down when you need them the most. To make sure your furnace operates efficiently over the next couple of months, use the following maintenance tips.

How to Keep Your Furnace Strong Until Spring

1. Program the Thermostat

Many modern heating systems come with programmable thermostats, but if your system doesn’t have one, it’s just an easy installation away for efficiency and comfort. Set the thermostat so the furnace doesn’t turn on nearly as often when you're not home. This will not only save you on utility costs but will also reduce the wear and tear your unit has to endure.

2. Replace the Filter Regularly

heatingAir filters do more than keep contaminants out of the indoor air you breathe. They also prevent dust and dirt from interrupting the mechanics of your furnace. When filters become dirty, airflow is restricted, causing your heating system to use more energy and work harder to do its job. This can lead to component failure as well as increased utility bills.

Replace your filter at least once per season, but be sure to check it monthly to make sure it’s not clogged by an inordinate amount of dust and debris. If you have pets or family members with respiratory issues, replacing the filter every four to six weeks may be a wiser choice.

3. Keep the Vents Unblocked

Whether your heating system’s vents are in the ceiling, wall, or floor, they should never be blocked by furniture or other physical objects. Vents should always be left open and unobstructed—even in unused rooms. This promotes the proper airflow your system was designed for so that it doesn’t suffer from undue strain.

4. Schedule an Inspection

If you didn’t have this done back in the fall, annual inspections by certified HVAC technicians are excellent ways to keep your furnace running efficiently. An experienced technician will clean the blower assembly, oil the motor, inspect the fan, and check the system for leaks to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Technicians can spot and fix minor problems before they escalate into major repairs.
