What to Know About the History of Mead

Origins

honeyEvidence of mead production dates back 8,000 years on the island of Crete off of mainland Greece. Ancient Egyptians enjoyed the beverage as well, including King Tutankhamen. Known as “the nectar of the gods” in ancient Greece, those who drank mead to the point of drunkenness during this time were referred to as “honey intoxicated.” The Greek deity Dionysus was the God of Mead before his name became synonymous with red and white wine. Julius Caesar drank a spiced version.

Mead was also produced in ancient China, India, and Africa. Its popularity spread to Northern Europe as well since grapes could not be grown due to the cold. Mead’s reputation as a drink of the gods extended to Norse mythology, as Thor, Odin, and other members of Valhalla enjoyed it.

The Middle Ages & “Honeymoon” Origins

The fermented beverage’s popularity continued through the Middle and Elizabethan Ages in Europe, with the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, and Queen Elizabeth I all fans of mead. Elizabeth I even had a personal recipe.

In addition to its role as a drink for gods, royalty, and other well-to-do individuals, mead served as the official wedding beverage throughout Europe before it was eclipsed in popularity by beer. The term “honeymoon” comes from mead, as newly wedded couples were expected to drink the beverage during nuptial celebrations that lasted about a month.

Mead is still produced today in numerous forms, including those made with fruit juice, herbs, and spices.
