During cupping therapy, special cups are placed on specific areas of the skin to create a localized suction. The practice is rooted in both Ancient Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine, and it is thought to increase circulation, calm the central nervous system, reduce pain, and encourage recovery. If you've never experienced cupping therapy before, it's natural to wonder what to expect from your first appointment. Below are three aspects to consider before your first cupping session.

What Do You Need to Know Before You Try Cupping?

1. It Is Painless

If you have concerns about pain, first know that cupping is totally noninvasive and involves no discomfort. In fact, the provider will ensure that you are comfortable throughout treatment, and they will check in periodically to see how you're feeling. The cups trigger a gentle suction action, almost like the sensation of a light vacuum cleaner hose against the skin. Some types of cups use heat, but only a minimal amount that generates no more than a mild warmth in the treated area.

2. It May Leave Temporary Red Marks

cupping therapyBecause the cups draw tissue upward, blood naturally rushes into the area of skin being suctioned. Although this is not painful, it can leave behind some temporary red circles on the skin. If they are particularly dark, it is often an indicator that fluids in that region were sluggish. The mark is a sign that blood, lymph, and toxins are flowing more freely and healthily. The red marks may darken after the procedure, but will usually not last more than a couple of days.

3. It Is a Quick Treatment

Cupping therapy is not a daylong, or even an hourlong, commitment. Most sessions are over relatively quickly, so they can fit easily into any schedule. The cups are only on the skin for anywhere from five to 20 minutes. The appointment should take no more than a half-hour from beginning to end. You are free to resume daily activities as normal afterward.
